I belong to a great "mom's group" for working women. In fact, I was the odd woman out when I wasn't working for a little while (they were nice enough to let me in anyway :) The group is a Yahoo! group, "WorkingMercerMothers," and while most of our socializing is done online, we also try to get together in person whenever we can. Perhaps you could start something similar in your area? I'm sure there are many moms in your area in the same boat as you. Good luck!

How ironic. One of their reasons for starting that group was to get away from the crazy M.C. rules. LOL! Maybe we should start our own group with no rules other than be nice? :)

@Kelly - we obviously think alike :-) A mutual adoration society here!

@Michelle - I know there are wonderful women and groups out there, it's just SO hard to break in - I'll get in touch with you soon :-) The group that you linked to is the one that said I'm not eligible because I can't attend enough required events - I had to apply to join - wasn't worthy. I look forward to talking/meeting!

@Stuart - ahhh, a male perspective! I completely agree with you - women judge to reinforce their own decisions, I see it all the time (and used to do it too). It's much easier to judge others for their choices than to fully examine and feel comfortable with our own. And of course I didn't just realize this, it's just the first time that I WROTE about it!

RE: Women love to judge other women - is this something you just realized? My experience is that women are more harsh and judgmental towards other women regardless of stay-at-home, work, etc...not so much to be right, but to reinforce what they choose to do. I believe this is more of a self-esteem and "my-own comfort" reaction more than anything else.

Wow, that is sad. :( I wish there was some way I could sneak you into our chapter. I've found the moms in MOMS Club of Holmen to be an awesome group. Everyone has been very caring and I haven't found any cliquey or nasty behavior at all in the 3.5 years I've been there. I made some slightly outside the norm choices (brestfeeding to 2 years, co-sleeping, cloth diapering for a while...) and now and then they tried to "help" me "fix" that but always in a very nice way and overall I havent' felt judged or anything. I guess I've been in this small community so long I didn't realize how bad it could get "out there".

While I can't do anything to change the M.C. rules, maybe we can find you an alternate? There's http://moms.meetup.com/1973/about/ if you don't mind the drive to La Crosse. There's also some open playgroups that I've seen advertised but never been to. I can find you more info on that. You're not too far from me, so maybe we could get together sometime. I don't have much of a schedule, yet, so I'm flexible. :) If you're interested and want to take this 'off site" feel free to email me.

Okay, I officially love your site now and am adding it to my Google reader - and not just because you linked to me (thanks, btw!).
I agree with so much of what you've written - esp the competitive playgroup vibe.
Great post.

Kellys last blog post..<a href="http://feeds.b5media.com/~r/b5media/Taxgirl/~3/289474091/" rel="nofollow">Al Sharpton Calls Investigation into Taxes “Retaliation”</a>
