Ah, June…

I just had to snap this photo as I left the driveway today.
I am immensely proud of what our front flower bed has evolved into, over the past four years. I never considered myself a “gardener,” but I think I might have to, now!
When we turned our attached garage into a family room and added a bay window, it just seemed like it needed a flower bed there. My husband protested at first, but eventually got on board when I began investigating annuals vs. perennials. He opted for mostly perennials, with a splash of color here and there added in by annuals.
In a few weeks, the butterfly bush will fill out, the scent of lavender will fill the air, and my grandmother’s prize hollyhocks will start popping up all over. It won’t be long after that when the delphinium and gladiolas will tower over the catmint and tiger lilies.
My favorite flowers now frame the birdbath that used to be in my late father’s backyard. It was always my youngest son’s job to refill it when we visited, and he still takes great pride in that task today.
I just love summer! Take some time today to stop and smell the… peonies.

Wow, they’re beautiful! When do you ever have the time!
I, too, am finding that I am talented at growing things in my garden. I have so little time, though! Last fall, it was getting very close to the first hard frost, and I knew I had to plant the bulbs I had purchased a few weeks before. I had gotten home from school at around 9pm that night, ran outside in my dress clothes, and in the pitch-black-darkness, on my hands and knees in heels, I was digging in my garden!

Susan, that must have been amusing for your neighbors! As far as time, I must admit that everything you see in this photo is a perennial, except for the tiny red flowers at the base of the birdbath. The rest have returned every year now since we planted them!
