You couldn’t watch the tube this past winter without tripping over a commercial for the ShamWow or the Snuggie.
Last weekend, I strolled past a shelf full of Snuggies in the local Target, and I took it as a sign that the Snuggie phenomenon is likely waning. And when I say “likely waning,” I mean, “thank God.”
The Snuggie is not only ugly — sport one if you want to look like you just stepped away from your job peeling beets in a Medieval Monastery — it’s also pretty silly: Another example of a product solving a problem you never knew you had.
But then I saw this, the Peekaru, which is a fleece kangaroo-like pouch for moms and dads to carry baby around in, and it made me a little frightened that the whole Snuggie concept might never really wane.
Since my own two kids were young, companies catering to the parenting crowd have introduced all kinds of cool baby pouches, totes, strollers, slings, bags, clothes, gadgets, widgets and what-not that are way hipper than any of the things that I, as a new mom, ever wore or carried or toted.
Sometimes I’ll pass by a new Mom sporting one of these things and I realize with a slight twinge that I miss those years. Then I see something like this, and I reconsider: On second thought, not so much!

That has got to be one of the most horrific products I’ve ever seen. But… I can’t look away.

Maybe it’s because I’m on my second glass of wine, but that makes me think of the movie Alien. I mean really - ugh.
RT @thismommygig: It doesn’t get much more creepy than this. Do you agree? [link to post]

It completely looks like the baby is eating its way out of her stomach. I’m so creeped out. Thanks for this image, Anne!
What I can’t fathom is how you get the thing ON!?! It’s hard enough getting a kid in a front pack happily, and then THAT on top of it? Hmmmm.
love how Chat Catcher shows how much convo re: a blog post takes place AWAY from the blog! [link to post] …

The Peekaru is strange, and scary. Wouldn’t carry a child around in that.
Re: The Snuggie: A student @ the school where I teach has one. Says it’s very warm, despite the flimsiness, IMHO of the material. Hmmm. Think I will stick to my blanket throw for snuggling up on the sofa.
Wow… I had a weird movie flash that crossed the little girl from Dune with Alien. Anyone else think that the baby in the pic looks uncomfortable? Perhaps R&D has no children and doesn’t know they actually move?
I’m with you on the Snuggie - who would actually wear that outside? I’ll stick with a throw.
That is Kangawrong. And scary.

I would love to know who came up with the “Peekaru”- there can’t actually be a demand for something like this. Its taking baby and mommy/daddy togetherness to a whole new creepy level.
